You state: “Our faith communities must strive to be the most empowering, engaging, enlightening …” You also state: “Spiritual formation is the process of being conformed to the image of Christ by the gracious working of God’s spirit …” On the surface of it, you would seem to be speaking of two different influences here. How would you see this?

I write on spiritual formation and discipleship because I believe it should be central to the Christian journey. More people engage worship than discipleship and I would like to change the paradigm.

What a wonderful God we serve!
Not only do we go through this process of spiritual formation but our spirits, once we believe in Jesus, are automatically seated in heavenly places, adopted as children of the Almighty God in Heaven. Instantly we are given access to the throne room of God and also to the Holy Spirit who serves us as we serve God and the society we live in.
What an awesome heritage we have in the name of Jesus.

“Can the modern mainline church re-engineer its ecclesiastical culture from events and committees to life style engagement and the beloved community of God?”

This is a question that I’ve heard asked for over 2 decades. I have to agree with John that it will take the Holy Spirit to work in church leadership to let go of control. God must be the mover and “shaper” of our hearts.

Terrific ideas! Your thoughts give me something to ponder as I begin to develop a discipleship class for the Sunday School class that I teach. Your questions also intrigue me as our Natural Church Development process wrestles with our weak area of “Effective Structures”. We have to be about nurturing rather than pure administering.

Yes, with the work of the Holy Spirit. Committees and events are easy because we can do them without God. Moving to the beloved community is hard because we have to let go, release our desire to control, and let God take over.
